Silk Worms

The silk worms spun their cocoons last month. And the moths hatched just before our road trip.

They can't fly and they don't eat. All they do is lay eggs and die. The kids enjoyed holding them because they just sit on their hands. We'll have to try some projects with the cocoons. Anyone know any good resources for that?

Worms, Our Newest Project

We got ourselves a worm composting kit.  We're setting up the garden.  Jim made a custom composting barrel.  But when I saw the worm composting kit, my homeschool antennae went up and I just couldn't resist.  So we set it up a couple of days ago.

We started with 1000 red worms.  I'm not sure how they know there are 1000.  Maybe they make them count off.  Maybe they make them sign in before they crawl into the jar.  Maybe they just take a guess.

First we lined the bin with newspaper.

Then we added the peat moss mixture.

And the wet, shredded paper on top of that.

And then we added the worms.

Then Jim and Lucas decided to have a snack :)

When we had it all set up, Jim was asking the kids what we should name the worms.  Elijah said, “We call the mommy worms Mrs. Worm and we call the daddy worms … Grandpa.”

Dishwasher

The other night Lucas happily licked his plate clean after dinner.  What can I say, guacamole makes people do crazy things :)  Then he proudly held up his plate and told us it was clean enough to go back in the cupboard.  I don't think I want to eat off that plate!

There's Nothing Quite Like a 3 Year Old

I'm telling you, there is nothing quite as entertaining as a preschooler!  Elijah has been cracking me up lately.  Every day he says something that I should write down, but don't.  The last couple of days I have remembered to write some things down.

Yesterday we were taking a walk to the park and Elijah said “You know what Aria-ranah telled me?  She telled me she wants a baby brother just like she’s a baby.  She telled me that last night.”  Hmmm… comments like that always make me wonder, though.  Does he know something I don’t know?

Today, he brought a little cardboard bee model to Rebekah.  She was going to help him put it together.  He had already punched out the pieces.  He handed it to her and said, “Here, Rebekah, I can’t do the deck-sa-rations.”

A couple weeks ago he was laying on the bed looking at my ceiling fan and said “I was a fan when I was a baby.”

You just never know what's going to come out of that boy's mouth.  But I'm always curious to see what comes next.
